In this podcast we're talking to former Royal Navy 2-star Admiral, now Director of the UK Pathfinders at Rebellion Defence, Alex Burton.

He spent 10 of his 30-year career on operations across the globe, including the Gulf, Indian Ocean, North Atlantic, Baghdad (where he was awarded the Bronze Star by the United States) and both Arctic and Antarctic Circles. He also ran seaborne security for the London 2012 sailing Olympics. 

In this podcast, we talk to Alex about why military training needs to move away from a traditional model and embrace technological advances and virtual reality battlegrounds.

TechVets The Podcast: Dan Brown Gets Disadvantaged Groups Digital

In this show we’re talking to Dan Brown, Founder and CEO of the Positive Transformation Group.

Dan has worked in technology for the last 20 years. But it hasn't been a straight trajectory to success. He began in a small company called Quintech International. It's a far cry from where he found himself at 15 years old, homeless and on a downward spiral. After battling addiction, he turned his life around and has set up the Positive Transformation Group to help those who find themselves living in digital poverty.

 

Key Points:

• With the pace technological transformations are taking place today, people who lack digital skills and access to devices are significantly disadvantaged.
• The government does make funding available for businesses to train employees, however these are often under-utilised.
• Through the Positive Transformation Group, Dan Brown aims to help businesses to better use these government training programmes to help those at a disadvantage gain employment.
• Through the Dream Bigger Initiative, he aims to improve the confidence of disadvantaged people, including veterans, by giving them the opportunity to talk to exceptional people.

TechVets The Podcast: CSR initiatives as tools for in-house talent generation

In this show we’re discussing how programmes designed to create tech opportunities for marginalised communities and under represented groups – including forces personnel – are the way forward for big business Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Joining us for this podcast is Steve Nolan, Head of Veteran Liaison at Fortinet (UK and Canada) and TechVets CEO James Murphy.

We talk about the various CSR initiatives that are available to service leavers and veterans including those run by Fortinet and AWS re/Start. Up for discussion is the concept of using CSR initiatives to generate talent in-house and the need for HR departments to stop chasing unicorns (full trained, experience tech jedis) and accept a better approach, that of nurturing their own talent.

The CSR programmes of 2021 are specifically designed to attract diverse candidates and create pathways for a larger pool of people to access opportunities in the tech workplace. By creating a proposition of value where both parties mutually benefit, CSR programmes will help to generate a pipeline of ex-service personnel who are trained and ready for tech employment in a seamless approach from resettlement, through in-house training to a designated role.
